1. All construction related permit applications, and any required supporting material, must be submitted prior to any work being completed. For questions on construction codes, building permits and sign requirements in the City of Livonia please refer first to our Building/Inspection Department at (734) 466-2580 or email

2. Zoning districts have different uses and requirements.  To get started check out our
 zoning district map and the city zoning ordinance to better understand each zoning district.  You can also check with our Planning Department at (734) 466-2290 or email with a brief description of your business project/plan so we may properly assist you with your planning and development needs.

3. Starting a business in Livonia?  Tips to help you get started...

Below are some guidelines to add to your “business to-do-list”:

● Create a business plan and do a needs assessment.

● Apply for a business license if applicable to your line of business. (Contact your Clerks office for details)
● Find a location or space, make sure the zoning for that location allows your type of business, and discuss your business idea and or site plan with a City Planner. (First inquire with your Planning and Economic Development office for zoning districts and site plan specifics. ● Apply for necessary building permits to remodel, renovate, expand etc. (Contact your Building & Inspection Department to discuss necessary permit needs. Click here for Building/Inspection Applications)
